Service Learning - 3rd Visit

For our last visit to the community, we conducted an interview on the Kagawad of the Barangay. This would be the second after our ocular during the first visit, when we inquired on what we could do for the community. Mr. Noel Urbina, the Kagawad of Barangay 709, had talked to us about the problems of his Barangay as well as their proposed solutions for it.

2 Urgent Problems of Barangay 709:

1. Family Planning - Since this problem of the barangay is being handled by the central government, with the aid of the local government, we did not meddle to much since it may be out of our business to interfere with existing projects for this issue. Although, Mr. Urbina had mentioned that this is the number 1 problem the Barangay is facing for every year, the increase in birth rate is tremendous and the family ends up being unable to support their children due to the number. With this, they are conducting seminars and free convocations for mothers and fathers.

2. Flooding - We focused on this issue since we observed that the Barangay keeps a systemised collecting of garbage which is scheduled daily. But we have to root back to which trash causes flooding. And usually this would be the plastics that are thrown anywhere. With this, we though of teaching the children the 3R’s, which I discussed in my previous journal. We are hoping that these children learn from us and they bring the lessons with them to their homes.

Mr. Noel Urbina is a leader. We observed that the people in the community respects him for he is eager to help the community, for the betterment of the citizens residing there. We are happy to be of help to them and we are hoping there would be organisations who would include them in their CSR activities since we see the potential in these children, but what is lacking is proper up-bringing - instilling in them the right values and moralistic views.
