Over the weekend, the group had to make a unanimous decision on which organization we would be reaching out to as this course requires us to. Thankfully, through an organization two (2) of my group mates are involved with, we were able to get a hold of Asociacion De Damas De Filipinas’ direct contact details.

Quick background:

Asociacion De Damas De Filipinas, formerly known as Fundacion de Damas Filipinas, is a charitable organization which serves as a temporary settlement for orphans especially children of ages six (6) months to six (6) years old. Founded in 1913 by the wives of the members of the Philippine Columbian Club, this institution was established for the purposes of giving basic health and welfare as a child caring facility to those abandoned, neglected and undervalued by deficient relatives and guardians.

An unfortunate tragedy took place at the settlement house on December 1998 when a raging fire severley damaged the 72-year old building taking 28 lives which most were children. It was later on reconstructed with the assistance of former President Joseph “ERAP” Estrada and has been fully functional since the recovery.

The orphanage located at Paco, Manila, promotes a God-centered percpective as they guide the children to a holistic upbringing. The organization’s vision-mission reflects their approach to teach the children about proper values and morals, instilling in them a God-fearing viewpoint and surrounding them with a supportive environment so as they won’t feel uncommon.

For our service learning project, we proposed to take the children out on a field trip to Manila Zoo as the 1st activity for our 2-part project. The 2nd visit would mainly be a lecture on animal lifestyle including nature and natural habitats. We would like to focus on this topic because it is uncommon to be taught about the relationship or the correlation of animals to its environment, which we are responsible of taking care of. Hopefully, we would get an approval from the settlement house so we could pursue our proposed project.
